One to One Mentoring
Big Brothers Mentoring
What if…
- Every child fulfills his potential?
- Every child is set on the right path today?
- Every child in Canada finishes high school, goes to college or university, gets a job and gives back to their community?
Wouldn’t that be something?
Big Brothers Mentoring
The Big Brothers Mentoring program provides boys and young men with a role model and a friend to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with. Through regular outings, a relationship is developed between the mentor and the mentee, that is built on trust and common interests, and is supported by our experienced case-workers. The result is a life-changing experience for both the mentor and the mentee.
The Big Brothers Mentoring program usually requires two regularly scheduled outings a month of several hours each and a minimum of 1 year commitment.
The program strives to do the following:
- provide a role model and a friend for boys and young men.
- promote the importance of staying in school and healthy relationships with family and peers.
- instill trust and self-confidence in order to make healthy decisions.
- encourage leadership skills and independent thinking.
- and above all, make a difference while having fun.

In-School Mentoring
Studies show that mentoring helps kids stay in school, avoid risky behavior such as bullying, and grow up having more respect for family, peers and community.
Helping children reach their full potential can lead to positive community outcomes like a reduction in poverty and unemployment, safer schools and neighbourhoods, and a new generation of civic-minded adults.
In School Mentoring
The In School Mentoring program provides girls and boys with a role model and a friend to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with, within school grounds. For one hour a week, mentors meet with their mentee and engage in activities such as board games, crafts or just hang out in the playground.
The In School Mentoring program requires a weekly visit of 1 hour for the duration of the school year. Matches do not meet over the summer break or during other school holidays.
The program strives to do the following:
- provide a role model and a friend for girls and boys.
- promote the importance of staying in school and healthy relationships with family and peers.

‘Explorations’ After-School Group
Play! Learn! Grow!
The Explorations Program is an ideal setting for students to develop social skills, social engagement, and gain exposure to a variety of new activities and experiences in a small group setting with adult mentors that are screened and trained. Each after-school session is loosely structured around the three key Explorations themes of healthy decision-making skills, creating new and fulfilling relationships, and feeling good about oneself. Healthy snacks are provided each session.
After-school programs are one way to help youth develop and strengthen social and emotional learning skills, as well as give them the space to explore their potential and broaden their understanding of the world around them.
‘Explorations’ runs once a week, for 2 hours (usually 2:30-4:30pm), for 7-8 consecutive weeks. Group sessions take place on either a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, and are usually held in the school gym, or somewhere on the school site, where youth are able to enjoy a wide variety of activities, crafts, and games together. Groups are facilitated by a co-leadership model with mentors working in pairs, or groups of three, with a small group of youth (10-12 students) in grades 5-7. This group welcomes youth of all gender identities.
‘Explorations’ strives to achieve the following:
- Provide youth with the skills and support they need to cultivate personal wellness and growth through interactive learning sessions
- Create a positive environment for youth to develop new friendships
- Guide youth in learning to strengthen self-esteem and self-awareness
- Promote healthy decision-making skills
- Establish healthy and trusting relationships with their mentors

Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds!
Many of us were lucky enough to have had a mentor step into our lives during our formative years – at that time when we needed them most. A parent. A teacher. A relative. Whomever, it was someone who treated us with respect and in turn earned ours. Who valued our ideas, included us, and encouraged us. Who taught us that doing good is every bit as important as doing well. And who gave us the courage to make tough decisions, the self-esteem to make smart choices and the confidence to be true to ourselvesGo Girls! is a group mentoring program for girls ages 12-14 that focuses on physical activity, balanced eating and self-esteem. The single, most important goal of the program is to positively shape the lives of young women and girls by helping them build a positive self-image – setting them on a path to reach their full potential in life.
The Go Girls! program consists of 7 mentoring sessions, held over a 7-10 week period, after school within school facilities. Each 1.5-2 hour-long session is loosely structured around four themes: physical activity, healthy eating, self-esteem, and communication skills.
The program strives to do the following:
- create appreciation for the benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle
- build understanding of what constitutes healthy eating habits and the risks associated with eating disorders
- promote the importance of positive mental activity and regular physical exercise
- encourage awareness of core values, personal interests, strengths and attributes
- support the development of leadership and life skills
- offer guidance in establishing and maintaining friendships
- and above all, make a difference.
Game On! Eat Smart, Play Smart!
In areas of gender and education research, key findings state that male adolescents frequently struggle with issues of body image, low levels of physical activity and unhealthy eating practices. Sound familiar?
In other words, boys and young men today go through much the same turmoil growing up as most of us did in our day. The journey to adulthood is never an easy one, but it can be smoothed out with the guidance and support of a mentor who cares and understands. More importantly, mentoring can help cement an active, healthy lifestyle that nourishes self-esteem and confidence.
Game On! is a group mentoring program for providing boys and young men with information and support to make informed choices about a range of healthy lifestyle practices. Through non-traditional physical activities, complemented with healthy eating support, participants are engaged in life skills, communication, and emotional health discussions designed to engage participants in the pursuit of life-long healthy lifestyles.
Game On! includes seven 75-minute core sessions. There are also four extension modules that capture potential issues and topics specific to various locales and the interests of the mentors and participants.
The program strives to do the following:
- through the lens of healthy living, openly discuss current and pressing issues facing boys and young men
- build appreciation for the benefits of healthy eating habits
- promote physical exercise through the use of non-traditional activities
- instill respect for socio-economic, ethno-cultural and racial diversity
- encourage leadership skills and independent thinking
- and above all, make a difference.
